Summary

Environment - The Jau National Park, located in the State of Amazonas, is the only one in the world which protects all the hydrographic basin of a river - the Jau. However, the people who live within the park face great difficulty in surviving, due to the restrictions of the legislation imposed on them.

Energy - After the energy failure occurred at the beginning of the year 2000, and the resulting blackouts, many companies from the industrial sector have built their own electricity generation system. This initiative has originated a new Brazilian energy model, characterized by decentralization of production and selling of energy surplus.

Economy - The Brazilian economy is still in a very vulnerable position. The constant surpluses of the trade balance are not enough to change the country’s financial situation, mainly due to its huge external debt.

History - During 300 years the calunga people’s way of life has changed very little. This community of remaining quilombos (hiding places of runaway black slaves) is located some 300 kilometers away from Brasilia, the country’s capital city. A hard work in farming the land and the traditional local religious festivities are part of their lives.

Market - It is the government’s role to prevent the formation of large financial conglomerates whose purpose is to avoid competition. In Brazil we have the Administrative Council for Economic Defence (CADE), an official institution which has the power to take punitive measures against infractors after judging them.

Memory - Frank D. McCann, an American writer, in his book "Soldiers of the Patria - A History of the Brazilian Army, 1889-1937", shows the Army’s role, for instance, in the abolition of slavery and in stimulating the industrialization process in the country.

Motortaxi - This kind of vehicle for carrying passengers has appeared because of the high travel fares and the bad condition of the public transport in some Brazilian towns. Although charging cheap fares, that mode of transport faces great difficulty in being implemented due to lack of security.

Health - Nise da Silveira is considered the most important Brazilian psychiatrist. A great admirer of Jung’s theories, she introduced in the country pioneering techniques of treating the illnesses of the mind, particularly the occupational therapy, by giving the sick activities such as painting, drawing, sculpting. Afterwards she collected these materials and created the Museum of Images of the Unconscious.

Theatre - Plinio Marcos was one of the major playwriters in the history of Brazilian drama, and one of the most persecuted by the dictatorial regime in the country. In his plays he discloses the lives of such characters as prostitutes and inmates.

Literature - Oswald de Andrade died 50 years ago. He was one of the great figures of the Brazilian modernist revolution which took place in the 1920s, in an event known as the Week of Modern Art of 1922.

Painting - Candido Portinari is an artist of a monumental work. His painting deals with the most significant subjects of Brazilian life - childhood, rural environment, social and religious issues. He is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest artists the country has ever had.

Economic development - Ozires Silva, former Infrastructure minister and former president of major large Brazilian companies, has made a speech showing the critical points of the country’s economy. The speech has taken place at the Federacao do Comercio do Estado de Sao Paulo’s Council of Economy, Sociology and Politics.
