Resumo
O artigo trata das relações estabelecidas entre os Estados Unidos e o Brasil ao longo da História, voltando-se, principalmente, ao período que compreende a primeira metade do século XX. O recorte da problemática se dá por meio do seguinte questionamento: será que a modernização – a grande bandeira levantada pelos norte-americanos naquele começo de século – pode ser entendida como sinônimo de americanização? Para responder a essa questão, realiza-se uma análise da história, da cultura, da política e da sociedade norte-americana, voltando- se aos autores brasileiros e aos autores norte-americanos que trataram da temática. Por essa via, o conceito de americanismo é explorado e relacionado com o de modernização, revelando como essas duas formulações se aproximam
e se distanciam. O estudo da figura de Nelson Rockefeller e sua relação com o Brasil abre novos caminhos para se pensar a questão da modernização.

Abstract
The article deals with the relations established between the United States and Brazil throughout history, turning mainly to the period that comprises the first half of the twentieth century. The problem is addressed by the following question: can modernization - the great flag raised by the Americans at that beginning of the century - be understood as synonymous with americanization? To answer this question, an analysis of American history, culture, politics and society is carried out, turning to the Brazilian
authors and to the North American authors who dealt with the subject. In this way, the concept of americanism is explored and related to that of modernization, revealing how these two formulations approach and distance themselves. The study of the figure of Nelson Rockefeller and his relation with Brazil opens new ways to think about the question of modernization.
