Resumo: O episódio do Grande Sertão: Veredas que se passa na chamada “Fazenda dos Tucanos”, do meu ponto de vista, inicia de fato a segunda parte do romance, a épica. É quando se torna mais intenso o seu tempo de guerras e põe em cheque a formação do herói. Ele toma consciência de que precisa se superar, o que o acabará levando para a tentativa do Pacto. Isto acontece depois da morte de Joca Ramiro. O grupo de jagunços ao qual pertenciam Riobaldo e Diadorim, depois de passarem a ser comandados por Zé Bebelo, se estabelece numa Casa-Grande recém-abandonada, onde são encurralados pelo bando do Hermógenes e Ricardão. De perseguidores em busca da vingança da morte do antigo chefe, Joca Ramiro, eles são sitiados pelos seus executores. É um dos momentos mais agudos do livro, que culmina com a matança dos cavalos - ato aparentemente gratuito, mas de extrema crueldade, que talvez só sirva para revelar o grau de ferocidade dos opositores. Os embates entre os bandos mostram como será renhida a luta entre eles e a quantas o de Riobaldo e Diadorim terá que passar para realizar o seu intento de vingança. Isto compõe a camada épica da narrativa, a mais visível. No entanto, subterraneamente, desenvolve-se uma outra trama, agora dramática, como uma sub-história, porém como o seu núcleo mais efetivo: o embate entre Riobaldo e Zé Bebelo. É nesse embate que se coloca para o herói a questão incontornável do Poder e da Chefia, quando o herói toma consciência de que não poderá mais ficar alheio a eles.

Abstract: The episode of the novel Grande Sertão: Veredas (The Devil to Pay in the Backlands) that takes place in the “Toucan Farm”, in my view, is where the second part of the narrative, the epic, commences. It is when the periods of battles is more intense, and when the hero’s character is put to test and forged. He becomes aware that he needs to surpass himself; and this will steer him towards entering into a pact with the devil. This happens after the death of Joca Ramiro. The skulk of jagunços of Riobaldo and Diadorim were party too, under the command of Zé Bebelo, settles in a recently abandoned farmhouse, where they were surroundeded by the Hermógenes and Ricardão’s band. After pursuing revenge for the death of Joca Ramiro, their former leader, they are besieged by their killers. It is one of the most acute moments of the book, that culminates with the slaughter of the horses – an apparently unmotivated act of extreme cruelty, but important to reveal the ferocity of the enemy. The clash between the two groups show how brutal the fight and how long and arduous the war Riobaldo and Diadorim will have to wage to obtain revenge. This part of the book makes up the epic layer of the narrative, the most visible one. However, beneath the surface, another plot unfolds, this one dramatic, like a sub-story, but with a more effective core: the combat between Riobaldo and Zé Bebelo. It is during this conflit that the hero is faced with the inescapable question of power and command, which he can no longer ignore.
