RESUMO

Objetivo: O objetivo deste artigo é descrever a metodologia empregada na avaliação neuropsicológica do idoso e suas contribuições, priorizando aqueles aspectos de interesse dos profissionais da área da saúde,em especial psicólogos, geriatras, neurologistas. Fontes dos dados:Revisão da literatura sobre o tema proposto nos últimos anos, incluindo referências de livros, textos e manuais dos testes imprescindíveis para a compreensão do exame neuropsicológico, e aporte da experiência clínica no consultório. Síntese dos dados: A avaliação neuropsicológica consiste em uma investigação minuciosa das funções cognitivas, sensoriais, motoras, emocionais e sociais da pessoa, com o intuito de se identificar algum comprometimento funcional neurológico, bem como as áreas preservadas. Utilizando-se bateria de testes e procedimentos padronizados, analisa-se detalhadamente a relação entre o comportamento do indivíduo e o funcionamento de seu cérebro, a fim de auxiliar no diagnóstico, na compreensão da extensão das perdas funcionais, estabelecer tipos de intervenção específica e adequada, e desenvolver um plano de reabilitação. Conclusão: A importância da avaliação neuropsicológica reside no fato de se procurar identificar precocemente a presença de algum distúrbio,bem como o grau de sua evolução. Uma vez identificado algum prejuízo funcional, pode-se contribuir para a inclusão social da pessoa, por exemplo, desenvolvendo-se novas estratégias para lidar com as limitações apresentadas, minimizando-as.

ABSTRAT

Objective: The objective of this paper is to describe the methodology used in the neuropsychological assessment of elderly people and their contributions, emphasizing aspects of interest to health professionals,especially psychologists, geriatricians and neurologists. Data source: Review of recent literature on the theme proposed and also references of textbooks and manuals of tests indispensable for understanding the contribution of neuropsychological assessment and clinical experience. Data summary: the neuropsychological assessment consists of a thorough investigation of cognitive, sensory, motor, emotional and social functions of the person, in order to identify any functional neurological impairment,as well as the preserved areas. Through a sequence of standardized tests and procedures, this paper analyzes thoroughly the relationship between an individual’s behavior and the functioning of his/her brain in order to add this information to the diagnosis aiming at understanding the extent of the functional loss, establishing specific types of intervention, adapting and developing a rehabilitation plan. Conclusion: The Iimportance of neuropsychological assessment lies in the fact of identifying the presence of some disorders in early stages, as well as defining the degree of its evolution. Once any functional impairment is identified, it is possible to work on the social inclusion of the person who has it, for example, developing new strategies to deal with the limitations presented by minimizing them.
